Experiments in Lifestyle Design: Internet Business from Rural Japan
ByExperiments in Lifestyle Design
So I recently heard about something called Lifestyle Design. I take that back I recently discovered lifestyle design. I first heard about it in Tim Ferris’ book the 4-hour Work Week less than a year ago but I never focused on all the stuff about lifestyle design (his blog is even named Experiments in Lifestyle Design). For me lifestyle design was something I was already doing. I was (still am) living in a tiny farming village, I had traveled far and wide to different places I wanted to go, and the world looked like an easy place to try out. I didn’t really see anything that could stop me (still don’t).
I ended up listening to the audio version of Tim’s book over 100 times on my long drives to a city or my daily drives through the countryside to go teach kids English (my Friday elementary school has 16 kids). Despite hearing the word lifestyle design over and over on my long drives it never registered as anything other than common sense… Until I found out last week that there is a whole culture devoted to lifestyle design and other peoples experiments in lifestyle design.
Last week I read an article over at Kathy Dobson with the question “Crave Adventure?” in the title. Of course I answered yes in my head. The article was about something called Tropical MBA and the first post I saw was called Live on a Tropical Island For Free. Sounds enticing doesn’t it? The site is run by Dan Andrews and his offer (applications were due on June 1st) was simple: offer someone to live for free on a tropical resort in the Philippines with full access to his mentoring and advice in exchange for working with him on his own business and blog projects (which would be an even better learning experience). Sean Ogle of Location180 was the first one and I found the site 2 days before the deadline and rushed in my application (I might show you some of it someday).
It was through Dan and Sean that I discovered a whole movement around Lifestyle Design, full of people who are turning their lives into a wild experiment with the minimum acceptable goal being the fulfillment of their absolute dream lifestyle. And many of them are becoming internet entrepreneurs (like me) in order to design their ideal lifestyle with full freedom.
My Experiment in Lifestyle Design
For the last few years my life has been an experiment in lifestyle design. My only plan was to find a cool place to go, get an interesting job to support myself, learn from everyone I meet, and take in every piece of life there is to be lived (not necessarily in that order).
If you’ve watched my video’s you know that I’m in rural Japan. It’s an awesome experience. But one that ends in 2 months. That’s why I’ve committed myself to building an online business despite having no prior experience or knowledge (until Alex Jeffrey’s came along). That’s why I have been putting every ounce of passion and motivation towards becoming a successful entrepreneur and learning everything I can along the way. So that I can go somewhere new in the world and experience a new adventure and use my creativity to build something valuable that is mine (not a boss) to give to people. Because I know that no matter what happens I’ll keep continuing my adventure. Whether I go to the Philippines, sail around the world for 3 months on a boat (yes that’s also a possibility), move to mega-city of Tokyo for a bit, or choose anywhere else in the world, I have already decided that my life is an adventure.
Your Experiment in Lifestyle Design
I was asked this question once by a friend and mentor. He told me to take it seriously and write down the answer to give to him. I followed his advice and it has helped me tremendously for such a simple exercise. So now I’m going to ask you the question. And I want you to take it seriously and write down your answer (paper, notepad, napkin, computer). Write down everything. And remember, there are no rules and no boundaries and nothing is set in stone.
What is your 100 percent perfect lifestyle?
Now I’m gonna go take a bath in a hot spring (my reward for writing this post!)
Peace,
Darren L Carter

Hehe I know what you mean about perceiving Lifestyle Design. When I first heard the phrase it was like “Oh, you mean that thing I’m already doing called ROCKING life?” But I can see the value in calling it that. It shows what a conscious process it needs to be if it’s going to turn out like the 100% ideal life that we dream of.
Congrats on rocking your version of Lifestyle Design, and taking the entrepreneurial leap. You have a brave soul and I know you’ll go far with whatever businesses you pursue!

Hey Darren,
This is an interesting post. Well we all have a burning desire to become financially independent. The perfect lifestyle for me would be to work smart, not as hard and focus more of my time with my friends and family, and travel a lot. I’m still single at present so not so much to worry about time with kids etc …
Keep up with the inspiring post.

Hey Darren,
The 100% perfect lifestyle? What a fabulous concept. When you are (as I am) caught up in life’s minutiae, you tend to (I do it far to often) forget about the big picture. Muddling through is certainly not lifestyle design. It’s lifestyle alright but not too desirable as such.
Thank you for this blog post, Darren. You did achieve what you set out to do, making people think. This doesn’t happen often enough. Keep it up… and get on with your interview

Hey Darren,
Ooooh a bath in a nice hot spring sounds lovely!
It’s funny you mentioned Tropical MBA because as I was adding you on Twitter the other week and was checking out the people you were following I came upon Dan Andrews and noticed his location said “Philippines” and so I clicked on it and I went to his website.
It intrigued me also but didn’t know how it would work since I live in the Philippines already. The place where they are located is in Mindoro which is about 6 hours away and with two kids I don’t know if it was going to work out. It sounded really cool though what they were offering and is great opportunity for anyone to enhance their skills while building their business as well. I ended up not applying but I wish you luck in getting the position. When will you find out?
My perfect lifestyle would be too long to list in this reply so for the purposes of saving space it would be to not worry about money, spend time with my family whenever I want, travel in the drop of a hat (literally have my suitcase ready), help and transform other peoples lives so they can be financially free, start my own village here in the Philippines and foster a farming community where everyone helps out and lives comfortably, and start an organization to empower young children.
This actually reminds me of an exercise I did recently where I had to list 100 things I want out of life. It really makes you think and I thought I had a lot but I still haven’t reached 100 yet!
You are awesome Darren, keep up the great work!

I did a bit of work on my perfect day after listening to Frank Kern. Basically it came out to be a life where I have enough passive income to work a relaxed schedule from a family compound on the coast. I’d like to be able to travel at will and click through all the major league baseball stadiums for at least one game and then take on world opera venues. Still working on the passive income or even the non-passive.

Hi Darren,
The best thing about blogging is the ability to take in anywhere that has an internet connection. It’s so cool to be able to pack up and relocate along with running a blog business. I’ve decided once I make enough money online to pay my monthly bills that the dogs and I are going on a long trip.
I’m not sure if that would be my lifestyle because I’m really a homebody. Hmmm, actually my current lifestyle is a good one!
Everything I need is right here. What I have is old (like me) but works well.

Hi Darren
My 100% perfect lifestlye? Thinking about it makes me want to cry. Almost 15 years ago now, I was in the process of a painful split from my long-term boyfriend/fiance. It’s a sad story and I won’t go into all the details, but I had lost a child, gotten depressed and he didn’t really want to know me anymore.
So I went away to the coast of Devon, on the Southern tip of England, for a one–on- personal retreat with an inner healing lady.
It was a memorable and life-changing experience. One of the first things she asked me to do, was to make a collage of my life: my past, present and desired future. She gave me a big handful of glossy magazines, a big pair of scissors, some glue and A3 card paper and told me to get going.
Even now, it makes me emotional. As I searched through the magazines I found so many pictures of the woman I wanted to be, the woman I was, or felt I was in my spirit.
There was one of a lady dressed loosely in white shirt and trousers, dancing barefoot in a beautiful light-filled studio. Another was of a lady sitting with arms folded over her knee, with a ponderous, but contented smile on her face. Another was of a woman standing with her husband, holding up a beautiful bouncing baby toward the heavens, her expression animated in happy laughter.
And the woman who really expressed who I feel that I am and should have been all these years? A lady sitting on the upper storey baclcony of her beach house, with her typewriter glistening in the sunshine, as she continues to wirte more pages of her next best-selling book.
So my ideal lifestyle? I was born to be a writer. But I’m not. But now I have the chance through learning about blogging, writing articles on the internet and general internet marketing through Alex Jeffreys, to develop that dormant gift.
I am married now, to a wonderful husband for almost nine years, and we are still believing that one day soon a bundle of joy will arrive. One day soon.
And then, I want to travel far and wide. I have a calling to work with children and young people. I want to set up and run children’s theatre, help write fun scripts for them to perform and just be there to bring out the creative best of our younger generation.
Darren, writing this has made me cry. But it’s also made me understand even more just what an opportunity we have before us, as students of the internet, to be who we are and to become who we were destined to be.
Thanks for asking and thanks for listening.

I’ve read through your comment a few times now and I can’t make any replies that do it justice but I do want to say that I’m glad you have found some happiness with your husband and I’m really moved by your calling. I’ve worked with kids for the last few years now and it has been great. But at the same time we do need people to bring out the creative best. I wrote in an email to a friend the other day that I think we are really wasting a good opportunity to teach kids how to become amazing people.

Hi Darren,
What fantastic changes you have made to your blog…very impressed.
We seem to be running across each other in many places on the net..I love that because for me it’s all one big new world…and I plan to make the most of every relationship I create.
Actually that is part of my answer to your question on lifestyle.
As I live in a very remote Thai village not that far from the Cambodian border, there are language and cultural challenges that I face everyday. I speak Thai (and English of course) but 99% of the folks around here don’t speak either. This means I need to be able to communicate in other ways…it’s bloody amazing what a smile and some simple offers of help will do!
You see my 100% perfect lifestyle is living exactly as I am right now…sure we don’t have reliable internet connections (most people around here could not even afford a refrigerator), power supplies are a lottery most days, I have no idea where the nearest coffee shop would be and it would be a 7 hour drive to the nearest nightlife venue.
BUT look at what I do have. Lucky to have convinced a beautiful Thai lady to marry me many years ago; we have 2 stunningly beautiful teenage daughters; a village where I am the only foreigner, the first many have ever seen in their lives; where everyone called me their “uncle Pete” and nothing is ever too much trouble for them; people will go out of their way to help and share, even if they have so little them selves; everyone in our village is somehow related (they didn’t or couldn’t travel far for romance!) and being accepted into this closed society is a real blessing.
On the occasions we travel into the nearest city, I am always asked the same questions by any foreigner I see – “how can you live in such an isolated place?” – these guys usually hang around in Thailand spending most of their days at a bar and bitching about whatever is the issue of the day – and they call that “living”
With a very passionate project my wife and I are running to help improve the lifestyles of our village by marketing their Thai silk fabrics to the world, can you just imagine the gratitude, happiness, excitement and enthusiasm this has generated. Just today we had a fantastic celebration for our first 15 sales online (people purchased sight unseen because they wanted to help our village!) and we haven’t even opened our online store at our website yet…..how could I possibly live any where else!!
Best wishes as always Darren and I will be following your blog business and your travels for years to come.

Hey Darren … my friend, before I talk about my ideal lifestyle … your blog post are very good and the first 2 vids were kool. Your doing a great job in life and a good start in your journey of Internet Marketing.
I have not been involved in our community to the extent that I’d love too since I’m in a home move process and finally I move next week closer to my work place (until I am financially free) .. but I’ve been taken sneak peeks on blogs and forum posts and its just amazing how “we” / “team” factor works.
Coming to my amazing lifestyle … before I really start with my lifestyle I want to live that first day WITHOUT any debts. Since I’ve been an adult, I’ve never been debt free, so that’s my first goal. Then would only like to do what I love to do … internet marketing, consulting, etc .. thats work. And should be able to provide family with that financial security so that they have no worries irrespective if I may or may not be around!
That’s a long comment .. but had to write it
Cheers!

Thanks Abizer!
Living without debts is a really good place to try to reach. I’ve been lucky and have never taken on any debt (never bought much either) but I know a lot of people who have. Providing for family – That kind of lifestyle is something that is really underrated when people talk about their ideal lifestyle (I know I underrate it). I’m glad you wrote out what you want your lifestyle to be. Kudos on that!

This is a good question to ask. The simple answer would be just to do anything without worrying about financial concerns, but even if that were the case, I think I would still do something with writing as it has been one of my biggest passions that I have. I’ll definitely have to think more into it though. Thanks for this Darren!

Hey Darren,
That is such an important question you are asking here in another great blog post of yours and I am thrilled to take the opportunity to give you my answers in a nutshell. In a nutshell because I have a lot of things to do today and I am still stoked and tired from last night´s long (till 4 am ) and awesome live coaching call with Alex Jeffreys.
Funnily enough I have been avoiding to give clear answers to your question which I have been “confronted” with before. Why? Maybe because I was too anxious before that my lifestyle was not compatible with the expectations my family had about what I should do. Anyway, here we go:
My ideal lifestyle is to enrich hundreds of thousands of people´s lifes all over the world by helping them to achieve what they want. I will do that by delivering and providing B.S. free top notch digital information products and services to help them making a living by pursuing their passions. I am free to choose where ever I want to live with my family and I have the freedom to move places whenever I want. I can spend as much time as I want with my family and be an active part in bringing up my children. I can spend as much time out in nature as I want to. I travel the world -like I used to do. I have the freedom to do sports daily, be in and on the water whenever I want -windsurfing is my favorite sport, but I love a lot of other sports as well. I contribute to whatever community I have chosen to live in. Helping others is my lifestyle. I want to run a digital information online business that works at least 80 % on autopilot and I can controll that business from anywhere in the world. I´ll dedicate upto but in general not more than 4 hours a day (the 4 hour work week is not my goal) to learn, apply, master and teach new skills.
My ideal day starts on the terrace of my home overlooking the bay of Tarifa facing the Street of Gibraltar and Africa with its gorgeous Atlas mountains. I have my hour of Yoga and then start working for my business. I will collect my children from school or the kindergarden and have lunch with them and my wife. Afterwards we´ll head down to the beach to do sports together or just have fun. Late afternoon I contribute 1 hour to a social project and then meet my family and friends to have dinner. I end the day with a good read on my terrace and then go to sleep.
That´s it in a nutshell. Now I am rushing off to collect my daughter Elianne from school. We´ll talk soon. Have a great day in Japan

Hi Darren
Great question,
A difficult one to answer as I think life is a journey that has twists and turns. Our lifestyle is therefore determined by how we cope or which turn we chose .
Our mental attitude is all important and so I would say my perfect lifestyle would be to obtain peace of mind and know it.
Over the years I have owned some very nice material things, but found that I soon got bored with them and was then looking for the next material rush…. so I don’t think the perfect lifestyle can be found with a single minded persuit of money..
I do think Jeff’s comment regarding health is important…. we all tend to take it for granted.
I beliveve we are a social species and somewhere in my perfect lifestyle I would like to be of some use to society
Hey Vince,
Great goal. Obtaining peace of mind and being happy in life I think is one of the best things we can do for ourselves. And you’re right about material things. For me they are fun to include in my life but as for my actual style of living they are just bonuses. For me I’m pursuing money in order to do the things that I want in life. So in a way money is the means vs. the end.
Health is very important. Part of my lifestlye is doing sports. I get a lot of joy of of physical activity and for me it’s a great addition to my life style.
Great comment!
Peace,

I was actually lucky enough to live my perfect lifestyle but ran out of money to be able to carry it on. In early 2008 i set off to australia to travel and work there, I soon found myself loving the way the aussies looked at work life it was work to live not live to work.

Hey Darren,
Sounds like you have quite the lifestyle now with all the traveling you do.
My 100% perfect lifestyle would be for me and my wife to be healthy again so we could do the things that we love like traveling. We have covered most of the US but there are still a few places here I need to go before going to other countries. At the top of my list is Alaska. I just have to go there somehow, someway, before I leave this earth. There’s a lot of fish there with my name on them waiting to be caught.
Australia and New Zealand have always intrigued me and would probably be my first stops on my way back from Alaska. (nice to dream!)

My 100% perfect lifestyle (today) would include running a charity organization out of my home (because I am a shut-in wannabe, apparently). Also, I would continue blogging and writing music. Basically, it would include more work than I have time to do whilst having a normal day job + more time with my family. How could that not be perfect?

My ideal life….hmmmm……
That’s a tough one, and I will be completely honest, right now I do not know what my perfect lifestyle would be.
I have never been a money orientated person, money is not the be all and end all for me, nor are material things.
I guess just to see my family happy and comfortable would be ideal for me.
I am aware I need to know where I want to be, before I can take the steps to get there, just need to figure out what I really really REALLY want.

Hey Sally,
It’s a great book!
Seeing your family happy and comfortable is a great lifestyle. One of the things that really clicked for me was when I shifted from thinking about my lifestyle as an image of fancy cars and big houses and boats to a “style of living”. Not the things in your life but the style in which you live.
You’re already moving ahead of the rest of the students (aka me) at a great speed so I can’t wait to see where you end up! Loved your new blog post too, lots of value (as usual).

Hey Darren Sensei!
Tim Ferriss is such a cool example of not conforming to the norms of the world. So many people accept the 9-5 status quo. It’s so cool that you’re creating your own lifestyle too man. I can’t continue with the status quo so I guess thats why I’ve taken a massive step in my own lifestyle and trying to create my lifestyle design!
I don’t think I’ve publically told this to anyone, so here goes you got it on Darren’s blog first!
My perfect life would be to own my own seminar company, inspiring people across the world helping them in their areas of needs whether be it in business building, relationships, money, personal development. It would be such a joy to know what I do everyday is making an impact on people’s lives in a positive way.
I would love to do that half of the year, then spend the other half maximising quality time with my mum and dad, my wife, my close family and friends. When I say quality, I mean really giving my fullest time and attention to them, unlike now because I work flat out 6 days a week just trying to get by. I can’t be with them in the fullest if you know what I mean.
p.s. I totally miss the onsens in Japan. They rock! Here in the UK, I have to make do with Jacuzzi spas in the gym with chlorine in which is a very poor substitute to the real thing!

Hey Bailey,
Haha, I see you know your Japanese culture! Were you here long? Awesome that you’re taking massive steps towards what you want.
That’s a really awesome perfect lifestyle. Those are all areas of life that I’m massively interested in so I can’t wait to see you making an impact on peoples lives through seminars like that.
And I know what you mean about not being with them to your fullest. Hopefully, by working hard and becoming successful with Alex’s training you’ll be able to free yourself and be able to be closer with them.
Peace,

First I was going to comment about you bathing in a hot spring but I wasn’t sure how that would come across so I am not going to comment.
You do ask a very thought provoking question.
My 100% perfect lifestyle would be one that definitely included spending more time with my wife and kids. I would be able to take my kids to school (which means I would still have to get up early) and pick them up (at least until they quit thinking I am cool enough to do so). During the summer, we would travel all over the world. I have never traveled much and I would be great for them (and me and my wife) to experience the different cultures of the world. Heck, we could even take quick weekend jaunts to places within the U.S. because I would have my own personal plane (I would have to get my license first). I would do these things with my family without spoiling my kids. I would still want them to work and learn some values about having a job and them teach them the new family business.
Thanks for making me think about this one.

Hey Rick,
I’m a big believer that if you ask good questions you get good answers
Really great reply. I’m glad the question provoked some thoughts! I think it’s so important that people understand what they want in life. Giving value (and values) to the people you love is such a great part of an ideal lifestyle. And the cool thing about that part is you can achieve that part of your ideal lifestyle without being rich with some creativity.
Awesome to see you go all out on your answer! Can’t wait for you to fly me around in your plane =)
